What the number means
The converter shows a short note under the result. It uses these published ranges for adults:
| Reading | mg/dL | mmol/L |
|---|---|---|
| Very low (ADA level 2) | below 54 | below 3.0 |
| Low (ADA level 1) | 54–69 | 3.0–3.8 |
| Normal fasting (CDC) | 99 or below | 5.5 or below |
| Fasting, prediabetes range (CDC) | 100–125 | 5.6–6.9 |
| Fasting, diabetes range (CDC) | 126 or above | 7.0 or above |
| Before-meal target with diabetes (ADA) | 80–130 | 4.4–7.2 |
| 1–2 hours after a meal, target with diabetes (ADA) | below 180 | below 10.0 |
Fasting ranges only apply to a reading taken after at least 8 hours without food. A single meter reading cannot diagnose anything, and your own targets may differ. Ask your doctor what is right for you. More detail is in the blood sugar levels chart.
Using a different unit from your doctor?
Readings from a meter set to the wrong unit look very strange: 110 where you expect 6.1, or 6.1 where you expect 110. If you move countries, read a guide written for another country or get a new meter, check which unit it uses. On many meters the unit is fixed by the manufacturer for the country where it is sold.
Make a log in your unitChoose mmol/L or mg/dL and print a log that fits how you test.Questions
How do I convert mg/dL to mmol/L?
Divide by 18. For example, 140 mg/dL ÷ 18 = 7.8 mmol/L.
How do I convert mmol/L back to mg/dL?
Multiply by 18. For example, 6.5 mmol/L × 18 = 117 mg/dL. There is also a separate mmol/L to mg/dL converter.
What is 100 mg/dL in mmol/L?
100 mg/dL is 5.6 mmol/L. As a fasting reading, the CDC puts 100–125 mg/dL in the prediabetes range.
Why 18?
One mmol of glucose weighs about 180 mg, and mg/dL counts per tenth of a litre, so 1 mmol/L is about 18 mg/dL. The exact factor is 18.016; the difference is too small to matter for meter readings.
Which countries use mmol/L and which use mg/dL?
The United States and several other countries use mg/dL. The UK, most of Europe, Canada and Australia use mmol/L. Use the same unit your meter shows.
Does this work for HbA1c?
No. HbA1c is measured in % or mmol/mol and needs a different formula. Use the A1C calculator for that. This converter is for blood glucose readings only.
